The Milwaukee Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society strives to provide a weekly opportunity for its members to experience the joy of ringing barbershop chords in fellowship with their friends, and frequent opportunities to share that joy with others through performance. The chorus meets at 7:30 pm most Tuesdays, click here for more information.

Meet the director

John Plazek has a long history in Barbershopping.  He has been a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc, (SPEBSQSA, Inc.), now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society, since 1968.

John is one of the few Certified Chorus Director’s in the Land O’ Lakes District.  John was the front line director of the Men-O-Harmonee Barbershop Chorus.  He served as the assistant director of the Greendale Village Showmen Barbershop Chorus and Milwaukee Festival City Chorus. In addition,  John was the assistant director of the Hartsmen, a close harmony men’s chorus located in Michigan City, Indiana, for 15 years.  The Hartsmen performed throughout the United States and England and made 5 recordings.

As our assistant director, John has co-directed Milwaukee to two Division Championships (2008 most recently) and one Most Improved Chorus District Award.  As our interim Director, we earned the 2012 Division One Most Improved Chorus Award.

As a quartet singer, he has qualified for the men’s International quartet contest with the Four In Accord and won a number of Division Championships.  John is also a quartet and chorus coach and has served as the Dean and a faculty member of the Land O’Lakes District Mini-HEP School (Harmony Education Program) for over 20 years.

In 2003 and 2004, John was the Land O’ Lakes District President and has held various VP positions since 1988.

In 2000, John was inducted into the LO’L District Hall of Fame and was honored with the LO’L District Barbershopper of the Year Award and Milwaukee Chapter BOTY award in 2012.

When he’s not singing, he owns JSP Advertising LLC, a Promotional Products Company.  He is the proud father of a daughter and son, Jennifer and John Jr. and is married to wife Jodee, a Physical Therapist and an accomplished Sweet Adeline.

When you combine John’s musical background and dedication to the Milwaukee Chapter and Barbershopping, it’s easy to see why he is our director.
